Blow Wind Blow!

Written by Toh Jern Yoong

This day was another exciting day, because we had new visitors! We started with an awesome game led by Speaker Jaeriel.

This game is like "Blow Wind Blow" but with a twist. The person in the centre says something like: "Blow those who are wearing red." And everyone who was wearing red has to get up and find another seat. If you can't find a place to sit, you will have to choose one of the four words written out on the whiteboard and expand on it, explaining what it means to you and how it is applicable to you. The four words Jaeriel chose were "Education," "Friendship," "Boldness," and "Discipline."

One person said that education is very important because it will help the country's economy. We also had another speaker expanding on the word "Discipline," because, during our preparations for college or sports, we have to be disciplined to do all the responsibilities which have been laid out for us. This game not only gives us some exercise, but it also teaches us to really dig into our brains. We all benefited from it.

After the icebreaker, Speaker Jemima led us in our devotions. She spoke about how we should learn to respect authority and the key elements in doing it. We then watched Part 3 of the S.O.A.P. video on how to respect authority. In the video, the girl just refuses to help the older teacher pass out the papers, and guess what? She was captured by the ICC police! ( haha)

After the video, we discussed about how she should have reacted and responded. Jemima then shared on how we could apply the character of showing respect in the chapter. We also had a very good time of discussion on how to show respect for the time, to the coaches, and so on.

After that we had our Chapter Sponsor, Coach Joseph to share a few things on effective communication!!!! Coach Joseph then invited Coach James to say a few words about his trip to the U.S., why he decided to sign his son up for ICC and how it has helped/changed him.

Then Coach Joseph took back the platform and showed us what is required of a leader....

Above all, a leader must be.........CLEAR!

We need to be clear in speech; giving the right and clear instructions is what is required the most to be a clear leader. When we want to lead well, we must speak well.

Coach Joseph showed us a funny video about the world's ineffective language most popularly used by youth today. We learned that an impactful manner of speech utilizes the sense of authority. We also discussed about the words that we ourselves use that are not 'Clear.'

There was "Whatever," "Okay lah," "Awesome," "Cool," "Maybe," "Good," "Dunno," "Something like that," "Dunno lah," and even more that we did not list down. Boy, it was then that we realised that as a leader, we cannot use these words to communicate, or people will get confused.

Then we had our teaching session by Coach Alfred.

How to handle a microphone.

Coach Alfred taught us that, when we introduce a speaker, we should not leave the platform empty. To let us practice this skill, he gave us a session during which we would introduce another speaker. It was a great opportunity to practice giving an introduction and handling the microphone.

He also taught us how to handle a mic and a mic stand. We actually should not test the mic when we get on stage or blow into it. We should actually test it way before the event has started and 'play' with the mic stand. So if you get on stage and find that the mic is not at your level, you can then smoothly adjust it according to your height and not fumble around, finding the appropriate knob to turn.

After the skill coaching by Coach Alfred, we had our portfolio coaches take over, and we got back to our usual places to get on with our portfolios.

In our speech coaching, a few of us presented our interpretation speech. We enjoyed watching and listening to the different stories portrayed.

After tea break and a time of fellowship, the speakers got together to practice our Chapter presentation that will soon take place in a homeschool conference.

It was another exciting day for our chapter members! Stay tuned for upcoming posts! God bless! Bye!

Happy Feet Day!

Greetings, friends! We are back! Sit back and relax as we tell you all that happened in our last meeting!

We were really excited on this particular day for two reasons. The first is that this day was the time for our Happy Feet Competition! Organized by some of our Student Leaders, the activity required everyone to come wearing beautiful or funny-looking socks. A few of us were really creative with dressing up our feet, and we had quite a laugh. The second reason for our excitement is the fact that we had visitors! A lovely family joined us on that day, and we were eager to introduce them to everyone in our Chapter and to make them feel welcome.

We kick-started the meeting with an icebreaker led by speaker Charis Chen. It was similar to the icebreaker in our previous meeting, in which Charis would tell us to form groups according to stated criteria for each group. And we had to group up in a limited amount of time. However, this time, there was an added challenge. A group no longer comprised of people huddled together. "Group" now meant each group member was facing each other and had their hands on each other's shoulders. Those who failed to form a group within the allotted time... hehehehe.... Observation Deck!

After the wonderful game, we settled down for our time of devotions, led by speaker Jern Yoong. In this great time of sharing, he reminded us about one of our popular ICC acronyms: S.O.A.P.

S.O.A.P. stands for:

Respect for S-ources
Respect for O-thers
Respect for A-uthority
Respect for P-latform

After devotions, Coach Joseph shared with us something interesting. He pointed out that the problem in many people today is the deficiency in both critical thinking and competency in communication. He also shared with us a quote by Theresa Moon, the founder of the Institute for Cultural Communicators:

It really set us thinking, as we realize the reality of living in the modern world. If we are not able to both defend our faith and to communicate it effectively, we will likely be shaken in our foundations, as the world bombards us with different ideologies from every side.

We then broke off into our Portfolio Coaching groups, and we went through our progress in the portfolios. Immediately after that, some of the speakers did their presentations. Speakers Jern Yoong and Jern Ling presented their duo-interpretation on the story "Are You My Mother?" It is a hilarious and cute story, and we can't wait to see the final result of their work! Speaker Charis then did a limited prep speech on the question: "What does God's love mean to me personally?" We all noticed that she had improved so much compared to her previous speeches. Well done, Charis!

Next was tea break. We had donuts and curry puffs. Yum! I didn't take the curry puffs; I was too focused on the donuts, haha!

Soon, it was time to decide who the winner of the Happy Feet Competition was! What was also exciting was that we made our visitors the judges. Everyone stood in a semi-circle around the judges and each took turns giving descriptions and reasons why they should win. It was fun hearing the different viewpoints, and we really enjoyed the creativeness displayed there. Finally, the decisions were made, and the winner of the Coaches was Coach Joseph, and the winner of the Speakers was Speaker Ian! Congratulations! The winners received a packet of chocolate!

After a wonderful time of casual fellowship, we came together again to practice for our Chapter Presentation on the Legend of the Three Trees. We were more focused this time, and we did well. Just a few more weeks to the presentation date! We better be ready!

All in all, it was a fun time together, learning, sharing, and fellowshipping. And that is all from me! Till we meet again, friends!
