Overarching Purpose

Written by Toh Jern Ling

Yay! Another ICC meeting again! We arrived, excited to learn more.
The icebreaker was led by Coach Joseph. It was really interesting because we, the speakers, had to go to different coaches and find out about the games they played as children…

I learned from Coach Stacey that she used to play ‘masak-masak’ when she was young. Coach Sandy used to play with marbles.

My father used to play ‘rubber seed challenge’. It was very interesting to learn about what our parents did when they were young.

After the laughter and learning, we sat back down to hear a word from our sponsor, Coach Joseph.

He taught us that we, as an ICC community, need an over-arching purpose; there is a purpose in every speech.  Otherwise, we would be beating around the bush.
Lesson: as we are caught up with a flurry of activities, let us ask if we are just producing speakers who fulfill the requirements. We must remember we are mentoring and building speakers with strong character. We are mentoring Christians to lead.

Next, we moved on to the teaching session by speaker Eliza.
Her topic was about memorization and finding your style of learning and memorising.

She did an activity with us.

There were three baskets with different slips of coloured paper.

She would give scenarios, and the decisions we made determined the color paper we took.

At the end, we checked which colour of paper we had the most of, and were split into groups accordingly. There were three groups: visual learning, auditory learning and kinesthetic learning.

So, after discovering what type of learner we are, we, in our groups, had to come up with a creative way to memorize our speeches. And here’s what we came up with:

Visual: Create visual aids (mind mapping)

Audio: memorizing out loud, paragraph by paragraphs

Kinesthetic: Act it out

After that came the… speeches! YAAAAAAYYYY!!!!!! :D

Round one! (DING! DING! DING!), we had sweet, sweet Charis to present to us.... (Darth Vader's voice) The Dark Side of the Chocolate... muahahahahah!!

I was sooo happy after hearing Charis' speech.. 'cause.. you know... one of my guilty pleasures is to eat chocolate. Now, eating chocolate is healthy and beneficial... As Charis said, "just make sure it's dark chocolate" :)

Round two, we had ET (Eunice Tan) taking us through the 'Journey of Mankind Through Chinese Characters'

Ooo... also, we had a special guest today! Meet Yun Yun!

Round three... Ranen Chan!

Sadly, he forgot to bring his visual aids... but, that didn't stop him from presenting a humorous and interesting speech on Euphemisms.

Thanks, Ranen! Great job!!

After round three... there would definitely be a round  four...... rigghhttt...???

So, moving on, we had Ian Chan to present his 'How to Prepare a Grab-and-go Bag For Your Family'.

His introduction startled us: " What if there was a big earthquake right in the middle of Kota Kemuning, Our HQ! Well, that LITERALLY got EVERYONE'S attention!

Ian showed us different types of things that we need and must bring.

After his speech, all of us were so inspired with his speech. Coach Joseph was so inspired that he even took a photo with Ian and his things!

After all the rounds of speeches, the speakers were finally able to relax after a full day, relieved and excited to go home and get a good night's rest before the school week begins yet again.

However, we're also excited for the new opportunities to be better communicators for Christ. :)
